The Art of Not Leaving: A Slow Morning at St Moritz
We arrived at St Moritz Hotel with best laid plans of beach walks, a spa treatment or two and maybe even a sea dip. But by the time we’d unpacked and inhaled that familiar Cowshed scent drifting through the corridors, the only thing we really wanted to do was stay still.
The hotel has that effect on you. Set between Rock and Polzeath, it’s a cool slice of coastal calm with just enough art deco inspiration to make you forget that you’re in Cornwall. Rooms are bright and breezy, with a welcome flow of fresh air sneaking in through open windows. It’s relaxed, but never pretentious.
Dinner was the good kind of simple: two courses with local ingredients and plates you actually want to eat. Afterwards, we slowly padded back upstairs, full and happily sleepy, set to fall into bed with the quiet Cornish air gently moving through the open window and enticing us to sleep.
Morning began slowly with strong coffee and a spread that could ruin you for all other hotel breakfasts: flaky pastries, softly scrambled eggs and Cornish butter you could eat by the spoon. The real beauty of the This Is The One package is the gift of time - no 10 a.m. rush, no half-zipped suitcase. Just another coffee, another hour spent in the spa and another reason to indulgently ignore the outside world a little longer.
By the time we finally checked out (reluctantly and at noon), we squeezed in one last indulgence, a Sunday roast that might be Cornwall’s best kept secret. Perfectly roasted potatoes, a pour of proper gravy and that delicious slowness that only Sundays can get away with.
St Moritz understands the rare pleasure of doing nothing beautifully. Come for the quiet and the spa robes if you like, but stay for the joy of not leaving and definitely not early.
This is the one package – a one night dinner, bed and breakfast and late check out for two people. FROM : £ 230 FOR TWO.
